Today was by far the hardest day of riding yet. Even though it was cool and flat I read the map wrong and what I thought was going to be a 60ish mile ride turned out to be 95 miles. There was mist in the morning and then some wind as I got closer to the Atlantic. I decided to take Route 158 from Sunbury, NC all the way to my destination to save time. It was one of those not much shoulder lots of car roads that made the majority of the ride feel tense. I really wanted to make it to my destination because I had made plans with Nick and Dawn the night before to stay at their place and in addition to having two young kids they run a breakfast place and so go to bed early. I made it to their place at 8:30 for an average speed of 10.5 miles per hour – who’s the man 🙂
I got to stay in their small cottage with the fresh air from the Currituck Sound coming through the windows all night long. I slept like a dead man.

You are riding through so much American history. So much to see, so little time.
I know. I could probably spend two years on this trip and still feel like I didn’t have enough time. I guess I’ll have to do it again.
Well come North Carolina where there are mountains, beaches, bbq and good craft beer.
Thanks bud. Very happy to be here. See you soon in Charleston!
These few pics from day 20 look like pretty flat terrain. Maybe you’ve left most of the monster hills behind!
The hills are gone for a while I hope. Lots of flat terrain. I’m going to have to get some good music to listen to when I really start hitting the straight long stretches in Texas. Even the short 5 mile stretches of flat, straight rode started to get boring.
Hey Adam, we in Ashland are still following your trail, I see you are in Conway, not terribly far from our place in Pawleys. Continue enjoying your trip and your reflective time.

Glad you are still checking out the blog. Because of the narrow shoulders and traffic I decided to stick to my bicycle maps and went from Conway to Andrews and then through the forest on 41 to Pleasant Hill and then into Charleston. I had heard SC roads weren’t bicycle friendly, but didn’t realize just how much that was the case. The drives were accommodating, but the ride was a bit stressful. Sorry I missed out on going to the bakery you told me about. I hope you are doing well.
I love the pictures Adam, its fun to follow your adventure.
Glad you like it. Sometimes I’m not sure how interesting it is. I have a bunch of days to catch up on now that I am staying with Aunt and Uncle in Melbourne.
